New Rules for a New Kingdom

Introduction

In James 4:7-10, we find a powerful call to live by new principles, acknowledging that our allegiance has shifted from worldly standards to the kingdom of God. Just as a new team manager brings in new rules, life in Christ requires us to adopt a fresh set of values and behaviours that align with God’s will.

Submitting to God’s Authority

James outlines five key rules of engagement for believers: resistance, proximity, personal action, humility, and refraining from judgment. He begins with, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). Submission to God requires actively resisting influences that pull us away from His truth. By aligning with God’s authority, we gain clarity and strength to withstand temptation.

Growing in Proximity and Humility

Drawing close to God means prioritizing time in prayer, study, and fellowship. It’s through these practices that we experience a closer relationship with God. Humility is central to this journey, as it opens us to God’s guidance and transformation. As James states, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10). Choosing humility over pride aligns us with God’s purpose and brings peace.

In conclusion, James calls us to embrace a new way of living that reflects our kingdom identity. Through submission, humility, and intentional faith practices, we follow Jesus as our ultimate guide, adopting values that bring us closer to God and reflect His kingdom in a world that desperately needs it.
