Holding Nothing Back – Overcoming Fear

Introduction

Hello everyone! I hope you’re doing well. Today, we continue our sermon series “Holding Nothing Back” with Part 3, titled “What Use Is a Grave.” Let’s dive into how Joseph of Arimathea overcame his fears to honour Jesus after His crucifixion.

Fear: The Silent Barrier

Joseph of Arimathea was a man of significant reputation. As a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council, he held authority and respect. His secret passion, however, was Jesus of Nazareth and His teachings. Despite this, Joseph kept his discipleship secret out of fear of the Jewish leaders. He feared losing his reputation, job, and security.

A Moment of Crisis

When Jesus was crucified, Joseph faced a moment of crisis. Seeing Jesus’ lifeless body on the cross, Joseph realized he had to act. Fear that had previously held him back was now overshadowed by the urgent need to give Jesus a dignified burial. Overcoming his fears, he boldly approached Pilate to ask for Jesus’ body.

Courage in Action

Joseph’s transformation from a secret disciple to a bold follower is astonishing. Alongside Nicodemus, another secret believer, Joseph publicly took Jesus’ body down from the cross. They risked their reputations and possibly their lives, but held nothing back in honouring Jesus.

Living Boldly for Jesus

Like Joseph, we must live in a way that openly honours Jesus. Are we living a double life, fearful of what others might think? Or are we courageous, proclaiming our faith openly? In a world that often dishonours Jesus, we are called to stand firm and hold nothing back.

Conclusion

Joseph of Arimathea didn’t let fear hold him back. His courage is a powerful example for us. Let’s reflect on our own lives and ask ourselves: Are we holding back because of fear? Let’s strive to live courageously, honouring Jesus in all we do.
