Found and Flourishing – The Power of Compassion

In our journey of faith, there are countless lessons to learn from the Bible, even from the most unexpected places. One such story is that of an Egyptian man in 1 Samuel 30:11-15, whose encounter with David and his men teaches us about the power of compassion and the importance of helping others flourish.

This Egyptian was left for dead by his Amalekite masters, abandoned without food or water for three days and nights. He had experienced neglect and cruelty, yet, when David’s men found him, they showed him tenderness and care. They gave him water, figs, and raisins, and through their kindness, this man was restored. What stands out in this narrative is that God wanted this Egyptian man to be found and flourish.

This story beautifully mirrors the Gospel message: Jesus finds us in our lowest state and lifts us up. Just as David’s men took care of this stranger, Jesus finds us in our brokenness and helps us flourish. God’s heart is always toward restoring dignity and offering a fresh start.

In our lives, we often encounter people who, like this Egyptian, have been cast aside by society. It could be someone struggling with homelessness, addiction, or any form of hardship. As followers of Christ, our role is to put some skin in the game and extend compassion and support. It’s not just about meeting physical needs but about recognizing the value and potential in each person.

When we serve in our communities—whether it’s through a church ministry, volunteering, or simply offering a listening ear—we are helping others to flourish. Whether it’s on the worship team, in kids’ church, or even behind the scenes with tech and admin work, our service contributes to creating an environment where people feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Reflect on your own journey. How did God find you? Maybe you felt lost, anxious, or stuck. But God, in His mercy, reached out, lifted you up, and set you on a path of purpose. Just as He did for that Egyptian, God wants you to flourish. And in turn, He calls us to extend that same grace to others.

When we engage with our communities and step up to serve, we not only help others but also grow ourselves. Serving others makes us less selfish, builds our confidence, and fosters a sense of belonging. It’s in these acts of service that we find purpose and discover the joy of being part of something bigger than ourselves.

So, who around you needs to be found and helped to flourish? Let’s be like David’s men, not turning away from those in need but instead stepping up, putting some skin in the game, and making a difference. Together, let’s be a church that embodies the heart of God—a community where everyone can find a place to belong and a chance to thrive.
