Appearances Can Be Deceptive – A Lesson in Stewardship
In Luke 21:1-4, Jesus highlights a widow who gives two tiny coins as an offering in the temple. Compared to the large amounts given by the wealthy, her contribution seemed insignificant. Yet, Jesus saw her heart and declared that she had given more than all the others. Why? Because she gave everything she had, demonstrating total trust in God.
This passage challenges our understanding of generosity. It reminds us that appearances can be deceptive. Those who seem to give the most may not actually be the most generous, while those who give little may be making the biggest sacrifice.
I learned this lesson during my time as a pastor on Anglesey. At the time, I earned a modest income and struggled to give. I knew God called me to be faithful in my giving, but it felt difficult when finances were tight. Yet, as my wife and I chose to be generous with what little we had, we began to experience God’s provision. Unexpected blessings came our way, and the church received significant financial support. It was a powerful reminder that when we prioritise God’s kingdom, He provides for our needs.
Stewardship isn’t about how much we give, but about the heart behind our giving. Are we willing to trust God with our finances, even when it seems risky? Do we give out of love for Him, or simply because it looks good?
The widow in Luke 21 teaches us that true generosity isn’t measured by the size of our gift, but by the depth of our faith. If we want to live all for the Lord, we must be willing to trust Him completely—even with our finances.
